An engineer from Aberdeen has secured the coveted Rising Star MBA Award at the annual Energy Industries Council (EIC) awards – in turn securing a place on a prestigious master’s degree course.

Brian Geddes, 34, works for px – which operates and maintains the St. Fergus Gas Processing Terminal just north of Aberdeen.

He received the national accolade for his exceptional achievements since joining the business just three years ago – which have seen him secure three promotions to his current position of Engineering Manager.

During his time in technical roles, Brian used innovative engineering solutions to improve efficiency, safety and the operational performance of the plant.

He now heads up a team of around 25 engineers and from next year, will manage a multi-million pound budget. He has a passion for developing his team and has supported one into a graduate apprenticeship scheme.

On securing the award at the EIC’s annual dinner in London, Brian also received around £17,000 in funding towards his MBA studies at Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen.

He said:   “I am extremely proud to have won this award, being selected from a field of truly excellent nominees.  To be recognised by such an eminent organisation as the EIC – and by RGU, which was involved in the judging – is a real honour.

“Earning the opportunity to undertake the MBA is fantastic and sets me up really well both for my future career with px and my ambitions to become a leader in the industry in the years to come.”

Established in 1943, EIC is the leading trade association for companies working in the global energy industries. Its member companies, who supply goods and services across the oil and gas, power, nuclear and renewable sectors, have the experience and expertise that operators and contractors require.

As a not-for-profit organisation with offices in key international locations, EIC’s role is to help members maximise commercial opportunities worldwide.

EIC CEO, Stuart Broadley, said, “We’re proud to once again work with RGU to find the industry’s next rising star. Brian is already doing fantastic work at px. This on the ground, practical experience, combined with RGU’s world leading MBA in Oil and Gas Management, will ensure he fulfils his full potential and, I’m in no doubt, become one of the industry’s leaders of tomorrow.”

px is a fully integrated energy infrastructure solutions business that delivers improved operating performance for industrial facilities.

Established in 2002, it employs over 500 people and provides work for up to 1,000 further contractors – operating, maintaining and managing high hazard facilities across the UK.

These include gas processing, gas and renewable energy power generation and support services to chemical processing partners.  The business also provides an energy trading and optimisation service in the UK.

David Henderson, Executive Director with px said: “We’d like to congratulate Brian on his success in winning the Rising Star MBA Award, which is a fantastic achievement and capped a thoroughly enjoyable evening for px.

“As members of the EIC for over ten years, we were also delighted to have been involved in sponsoring and helping with the judging of the Collaboration Award and presenting the prestigious Company of the Year Award.

“EIC is one of the key trade bodies within our core sectors and offers an extensive network of customers and suppliers – as well as industry information that is both current and relevant. Membership has also helped us to raise our profile and market position through networking, trade conferences and various other functions and events – including our own success in winning the Collaboration Award last year.”
